The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit the 40,000 milestone for the first time on Thursday, about 19 months after the last time it crossed the 30,000 threshold. Since last passing 30,000 on Oct. 17, 2022, no Dow stock has seen a bigger percentage gain than Caterpillar – which has almost doubled in price. Keep in mind that the Dow is a price-weighted index that gives higher-priced stocks more influence. Five of the Dow's 30 stocks – Microsoft, Caterpillar, Goldman Sachs , Salesforce and American Express – have made up half of the index's overall gains in the journey from 30,000. Only one stock – Johnson & Johnson – is decisively lower since the Dow last crossed 30,000.

Thin as biopics go, the power of Abela’s portrayal elevates the film, providing a poignance and strength that’s the clearest motivation to go, go, go. Then again, as constructed here, the two went hand in hand, with the lyrics to songs like “Back to Black” and “Rehab” directly addressing her addictions to her relationship with Blake and alcohol. As a key witness testified inside the Manhattan criminal courthouse on Tuesday morning, an increasingly familiar scene unfolded outside, as another in a parade of well-known visitors — this time Mike Johnson, the speaker of the House — stepped up to a microphone. “This is a man who is clearly on a mission for personal revenge,” Mr. Johnson said, attacking the man on the stand, Michael D. Cohen, the former fixer to Donald J. Trump. “He is someone who has a history of perjury. In recent days, Trump allies have stepped up one after another as his proxies, although Mr. Trump used a different term. “I do have a lot of surrogates,” he said in remarks before trial proceedings began on Tuesday, “and they are speaking very beautifully.”

The question set the tone for the cross-examination of the Manhattan district attorney’s key witness in the hush money trial against the former president. For roughly two hours, Blanche began a cross-examination to try to discredit Cohen’s allegations against Trump. China and India have not reduced coal generation for electricity, according to a new study, making it harder for Asia's largest carbon emitters to reach their climate targets. While both Asian countries have ambitious plans to cut emissions, heavy reliance on coal — the dirtiest fossil fuel — continues to be the most reliable and affordable way of meet rising electricity demand. The highest increases came from China (+319 TWh) and India (+100 TWh), the study showed.
